Wreckage

What now,
What next,
Is this the end of the line
Where the weight of a lifetime’s endeavour
Sinks without trace
Amidst the rocky fragments of fortress walls
Built to protect who knows what?

Is this the last time
I trust someone with buried treasure
Only to see it squandered on false pretences
Hidden behind a ‘do not disturb’ sign
At the door of a mind
That must not be affronted
By honest admission?

If, so
So be it
